About The Project...

The Problem: Personality clashes occur all the time and can cause major issues in society.

Background: We picked this theme because personality clashes and leadership desires led to the chaos on the island in The Lord of the Flies. The idea came to us because Alex is taking psychology and she learned about personalities.

Real Life: This theme is found in real life quite often. In the workplace there are typically two types of people: hardworkers and those who slack a bit. Typically the hardworkers get annoyed with the slackers because they aren't doing their job. The slackers tend to get annoyed with the hardworkers because they're making them look bad. The key to solving this problem is to accept that everyone is different and have different work ethics. Another example in the real world would be sibling fights. When siblings have opposite personalities a fight may ensue until a winner is obvious.

What does this mean for schools? Differences in personalities will inevitably lead to some sort of bullying.

"What is termed a personality clash is often a jarring that occurs when someone challenges a deeply-held value or belief. We view it as a threat, and we fight hard to prove that we are "right" and they are "wrong." What we are really doing is seeking confirmation that we have no reason to change."

What can you do?

  • Take time by yourself to decide if the issue is a true threat or simply a difference in opinions.
  • Talk to the person individually.  Often communication is the easiest and quickest way to solve a problem.
  • Put yourself in the other person's shoes.  Chances are good that there's something about yourself that you could improve something about yourself also!
  • Be polite, respectful, and attentive.
  • Ask for feedback from the peer or co-worker a few days after your discussion.
  • If an issue gets out of hand, do not think you have to deal with it yourself!  Inform  a guardian, trusted friend, teacher, or boss about the problem.
